VGCS was established in 2013 with a clear mission: to develop and implement Edgenuity (formerly e2020) e-courseware as the cornerstone of a four-year high school program. During its early years, Edgenuity primarily supported credit recovery, summer school, and medically fragile students. This foundation enabled VGCS’s students and faculty to pioneer a blended learning approach, combining digital curriculum with face-to-face instruction to enhance flexibility and engagement.
Building on this foundation, the 2017-18 school year marked a significant advancement as VGCS integrated Edgenuity with Google G-Suite. This initiative empowered teachers to supplement standard e-courses with custom materials delivered via Google Classroom. Every classroom teacher began maintaining a Google Classroom for each course, providing syllabi, assignments, and resources. This shift fostered greater instructional creativity and improved student engagement by personalizing learning experiences.
Following this advancement, VGCS transitioned in the 2021-22 school year to IL Classroom’s (formerly LearnZillion) state-approved, high-quality Illustrative Math (IM) curriculum for Algebra 1 (Grade 9), Geometry (Grade 10), and Algebra 2 (Grade 11). This adoption led to noticeable improvements in student achievement and mathematical understanding, as students benefited from rigorous content aligned with state standards.
Building on the momentum of curricular enhancement, VGCS implemented IL Classroom’s Odell ELA curriculum for Grades 9 through 12 in the 2022-23 school year. This state-approved, high-quality English Language Arts program improved instructional quality, supporting stronger literacy outcomes and enabling teachers to deliver engaging, standards-based lessons.
In tandem with curriculum upgrades, the 2022-23 school year also saw the deployment of the GoGuardian platform, a classroom management system designed to help teachers maintain a focused digital environment. GoGuardian allows educators to control student Chromebook access, ensuring that students remain engaged with designated content and reduce digital distractions. This measure has contributed to a more productive and controlled classroom experience.
Looking ahead to 2025-26, VGCS plans to pilot the implementation of Classroom Ed Reports’ high-quality OpenSciEd curriculum for Physical Science (Grade 9), Biology (Grade 10), and Chemistry (Grade 11). This future initiative reflects VGCS’s ongoing commitment to delivering rigorous, relevant science instruction and fostering deeper student engagement in STEM disciplines.
